The Halloween party of October '64

Sherwood Hall

We purchased a barrel of cider from a local producer. I don't remember who the lucky
person was, but it was stored in the dorm room of a classmate, on end.
The first sign that something was amiss was a stream of cider coming out
under the door. Biology had happened at the warm temp of the room. The
bung had blown and the cider had drained down to the level of the bung
hole. A tragic waste of good fresh cider, and a challenging cleanup.

The concept of cleanup leads to the great and utterly misbegotten
snowball fight in which some creative soul decided to escalate with an
ink-loaded snowball. Sadly, the snowball landed inside on the terrazzo
stairway of the dorm. Even more sadly, the steps hadn't been sealed yet
and absorbed the ink hungrily. We worked on the stain with sandpaper
for what seemed like hours.

Ah yes, I remember that party. It was cold and there was light snow around the dorms. Fortunately, not all the cider wound up on the floor!

Being the ‘60s, many of us pretended to some musical talent and brought our guitars, etc. to college. Kirk Cheyfitz had some electric instruments and decided the party needed a live band. I had some slight ability with acoustic guitar, but I was totally unprepared when Kirk handed me an electric bass. I had not the slightest idea what to do with it. I’m not sure Kirk did either since his directions were simply to pluck on the bass string for whatever chord we were playing at the moment. It might have helped if he’d told me how the damned thing was tuned!

I embarrassed myself with the electric bass for a while and then gave it up. The drinks and cold and noise covered my fumbling pretty well (I hoped), and no one ever complained.

I also remember the ink stains on the tile. Mr. Howell was very upset with us and had us working away to clean up the stains. We never got them completely cleaned up. I remember there always being a faint stain on the landing going into C Dorm.
